Is Rome Too Noisy at Night?

There’s no doubt that Rome is a bustling city. As you explore Rome, you can hear the buzz of Vespas on the road, the trinkle of fountains, the chatter of conversations in Italian. But is Rome too loud? Especially at night?

The Italian environmental association Legambiente conducted some noise readings in conjunction with an Italian newspaper and found illegal nighttime noise levels (over 55 decibels) in many areas of Rome. According to WantedinRome.com, “the loudest street in the city is Vicolo del Cinque in Trastevere, which recorded a volume of 80 decibels, a level of noise comparable to an aircraft taking off.”

“At 78 decibels, the next loudest street was Via Madonna ai Monti in the central Monti district; 77 in Campo de’ Fiori; and over 67 decibels in Piazza delle Coppelle between the parliament and Piazza Navona,” WantedinRome.com reported.

It is important to consider that the noise test was conducted during June and there is likely more noise in the warm summer months. Still you might want to consider staying in a Rome hotel that is away from these high-noise locations.
