Italian art newspaper Artribune has named Rome’s MAXXI museum the Best Museum in Italy for 2019. MAXXI, a museum of modern art, stands for Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo.
MAXXI, which opened in 2010, showcases contemporary art by Italian and foreign artists. The institution comprises two museums: a museum of art, and a museum of architecture. Its building was designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, who won a contest to earn the commission. MAXXI was built on a former military barracks site, and is located in Rome’s Flaminio neighborhood.
Artribune gave the honor to MAXXI because of the museum’s “great quality and quantity of its exhibitions and events” in 2019, especially its exhibit on Maria Lai, an influential contemporary artist from Sardinia who was active in the 20th century.
The newspaper also awarded Rome as the Best Italian City, and Rome’s Monitor Gallery as the Best Italian Gallery.
