One of this year’s most-anticipated dinners in Rome is not for the faint of heart – not because it features unusual food, but because the table is set and suspended five stories in the air. This unique opportunity is the creation of Dinner in the Sky, a fine dining concept that rotates between 45 countries for short periods – it will be in Rome from Sept. 15 to 30 – and gives new meaning to the phrase “adventurous eater.”
Before the four-course Italian meal begins, guests buckle into their seats around the table with a seatbelt harness, and a crane hoists diners and the table 50 meters (about 164 feet) into the sky. Each day a different chef whips up the meal, which includes beer and wine and is served over a 70-minute period. Waiters and the day’s chef are stationed in the middle of the table to serve and explain the menu to up to 22 guests per session.
The Belgian concept began as a special event for young chefs in May 2006, and has served more than 5,000 dinners around the world since. Apart from dinner, which is 159€, guests can enjoy lunch, brunch, cocktails or wine tasting in the sky. Dinner times are 8:20 and 10:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.dinnerinthesky.it
