Piazza di Spagna pedestrianized in RomeThe Piazza di Spagna – the piazza just in front of Rome’s famous Spanish Steps – became more pedestrian friendly Monday with a new ban on vehicles.
According to ANSA, “The city threatens fines of up to 80 euros for drivers entering the pedestrian zone, which will remain in place until the end of November. Some local residents complained that closing the square entirely will force more traffic onto other nearby streets, such as Via Condotti.”
The Spanish Steps are one of the most popular attractions for tourists. The jewelry company Bulgari recently agreed to sponsor the renovation of the steps.
The Colosseum also became more pedestrian friendly as Rome’s city council agreed to a partial pedestrianization of the Via dei Fori Imperiali just next to the iconic structure.
