In general, Italians love the beach. They love lots of togetherness at the beach too – you will see rows and rows of chairs and umbrellas all next to each other. But the summer of 2014 has turned into something of a wash beach-wise, it seems. ANSA reports, “The lingering effects of Italy’s recession and the “crazy weather the country has endured so far this summer, with frequent rain and storms, has caused a slump in seaside tourism this season.”
According to a business association, customers at beaches (where they rent chairs, umbrellas and eat) are down 70% for June and July 2014 over those months last summer. But there’s still time to make up for the season. August is when nearly all of Italy (not kidding) goes on vacation and most families head to the beach. If the weather is good, business will be brisk!
